Advent Challenge – Day 4 – Advent Calendar
Advent calendars are about the simplest Advent tradition to maintain and are a fun and easy way to help anticipate Christmas. Unfortunately, most commercially available Advent calendars have nothing to do with Advent, or Christ. I managed to luck out and my mom found a nice one from a Catholic bookstore that has a nativity scene on the front, and a little Scripture verse on the inside of each door. If you do use Advent calendars, I strongly urge you to resist the temptation to buy one with SpongeBob or Dora on the front, as this tradition then simply becomes a gimmick.
If you can’t find a more Christmas-oriented calendar, there’s all kinds of alternatives to the ones you find in the grocery store, and let’s be real, the chocolate in those calendars isn’t that good anyway.
This calendar from Storytime Felts depicts the road to Bethlehem, and has a little felt Mary on a donkey that you can move closer to Bethlehem each day.
Some stores also carry little Advent calendar blocks or bags that you can open up and place whatever you wish inside. I think it would be really neat to place a figurine from your nativity set into each bag and let the nativity scene build as Advent progresses!
You could also go old school (and Protestant…shhh, I won’t tell them they had a good idea!), and mark the days on your front door with chalk!
